The Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Program has been offered as a partnership between SIA and Saskatoon Open Door Society since late 2005.
Participants in ELT are skilled immigrants with education and work experience from outside of Canada, who are now settled in Saskatchewan and wish to re-enter their areas of expertise. After 15-weeks of intensive language and career development training, participants complete a two to six month Work Experience Placement, in which they are placed with an employer directly related to the participant’s skill set. People wishing to apply for ELT should contact Saskatoon Open Door Society.
A unique aspect of the ELT Program is the Mentoring component, which is administered by SIA. Here, a participant is matched with a compatible mentor in his/her area of training for two to six months. For the participant, this is a chance to gain more knowledge of the Canadian workforce and workplace culture, as well as to make a connection with an experienced person who can guide him/her through some of the obstacles s/he will face in gaining employment in Canada.
For the mentor, this is a chance to assist in the development of someone who wants to become established in their field in Canada, as well as an ideal opportunity to increase his/her own knowledge and awareness of other cultures and how his/her occupation is carried out in other countries. The time commitment on the part of the mentor is about one hour per week. For more information on mentoring, please contact the SIA office.
