Equity & Anti-Racism

"We must be the change we wish to see in the world."
                                                     - Mahatma Gandhi

The Equity and Anti-Racism program underlies each one of SIA' s program areas and projects. More specifically, this program provides the basis of our aim to eliminate racial discrimination and to likewise create and advocate for equal opportunity for racialized persons.

Our Equity and Anti-Racism initiatives include the following:

March 21st
Each year the SIA works with a wide range of community organizations, institutions, and businesses to coordinate and host activities for March 21st Events (the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination).

Advocacy
SIA advocates for change to discriminatory policies, programs, legislation, etc. through various means, including writing letters to elected officials and to the local media. Recent publications include Star Phoenix letters regarding MP Jim Pankiw's racist flyers, and an article in support of Employment Equity Programs.

Public Education
SIA engages in education and awareness to effect institutional change by awareness of equity and anti-racism issues. This information is relayed through educational materials and events, and through our workshop and consultancy services. Expert consultants provide workshops, consultations, seminars, and other services are provided to educational institutions, businesses, organizations and individuals.

We focus on the following topics: The origins and contemporary manifestations of racism; the inconsistency of racist practices with principles outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms; cultural diversity as a unique and defining characteristic the province and nation; the contributions of immigrants, refugees and Canada's First Nations people to the social, economic, and cultural fabric of our society; and barriers that result from racism, which include limited access of racialized persons to health, education, and the skilled and permanent labour market.
