Intercultural Education

The Saskatchewan Intercultural Association (SIA) is pleased to offer Intercultural Education by request in Saskatchewan. The SIA is licenced to administer the IDI® and uses this tool to provide intercultural training options to groups and individuals looking to increase their intercultural competencies.

Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI) Overview:

The IDI is a powerful assessment tool to help individuals and teams assess and reflect on stages of cultural competencies. The results of the IDI are arrayed along the Intercultural Development Continuum (IDC), a theoretical framework that ranges from a monocultural mindset to a more intercultural or global mindset. High intercultural competence is the capability of deeply shifting cultural perspective and bridging behavior across cultural differences. The IDC is a model of intercultural competence grounded in the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) originally proposed by Milton Bennett (1986,1993). Since the original DMIS was proposed, IDI research findings have both supported the basic tenets of the DMIS and provided a revision of some aspects of its framework (Hammer,2009a,2011). The IDC represents this revised theoretic framework, which the IDI in turn measures.

What is the IDI Assessment Tool?

  • A theory-based (not opinion-based) inventory which is a cross-culturally validated assessment of intercultural competence
  • A 50 item questionnaire available in 14 languages.
  • It has demonstrated content, construct and predictive validity in organizations and in educational institutions with over 60 published articles & book chapters & 66 Ph.D. dissertations.
  • The IDI is currently being used by 1,800 qualified IDI administrators in 30 countries

Why use the IDI?

  • To understand the developmental stages of the intercultural continuum through which people move towards greater intercultural effectiveness
  • To assess cross-cultural competencies for teams or individuals working in cross-cultural situations
  • To determine areas that facilitate, or limit, cross-cultural competence for teams or individuals
  • To increase self-awareness of intercultural competencies, identify issues that may be impeding development, and encourage further development
  • To establish a language and conceptual framework for discussing intercultural interactions
  • To determine training and educational needs

How does it work?

  • Participants complete a confidential (password accessed) online inventory
  • A Qualified IDI Administrator creates a detailed profile (for a group and/or individuals)
  • IDI Administrator explains stages of the Intercultural Development Continuum (IDC)
  • IDI Administrator provides a detailed profile and debriefing and/or intercultural training
  • Teams or individuals reflect on results of inventory, strategize for further development and achieve greater understanding of reactions to cultural difference. Individual coaching can assist development

How long does it take?

  • The IDI takes about 20-30 minutes
  • Individual participants complete the online inventory before the scheduled workshop.
